Polyamory and Open Marriage

LOL Ok, I had better start by saying “Mum and Dad” don’t worry there isn’t anything I haven’t told you yet :-)

It’s funny, so many people I know currently are struggling in their relationships. Struggling with time, struggling with commitments and compromise but most importantly struggling with years or “things unsaid” or even worse “jealousy”.

Tonight I was thinking of a few people I met through the website

http://www.tribe.net/ a few years ago, a couple were in open marriages and one identified herself as a polyamorist. A term I hadn’t heard before.

Polyamory: Literally, “many loves”. A generic term for non-monogamy, with a heavy emphasis on honesty and responsibility

I think I am to conservative for this sort of arrangement, but am fascinated by the relationship dynamics that must exist for this to work. Just imagine the depth or communication and honesty that must exist for this to be successful, I know it must be fraught with difficulty but from great honest communication comes trust.

My wife and I strive to have that same level of honesty and depth of communication in our marriage, and I know we love each other deeper each time we discover something new. We aren’t prefect but we know how important it is and It’s not always easy but it is completely rewarding.

I don’t put the idea of open relationships or polyamory forward as some sort of promotion, but simply the idea that alternatives exist and that maybe to find happiness we need to go outside our comfort zones and try see what works for others. I wonder if my friends would be happier if they weren’t living in such restricted relationships where trust is now almost non existent.

My feeling about this is perfectly summed up by a quote used in the following video on polyamory …

“To look at love as that condition where another persons happiness is essential to your own.”

Have a look at http://www.jennyonthepage.com/. Jenny Block is a freelancer who writes about arts and culture for a wide variety of regional and national publications. I loved reading the first chapter of her new bookwhich is available on her website, maybe you will to!
